Wirral cancer support worker launches 'Hug in a Bag' initiative for breast cancer patients
Project delivers comfort and care through thoughtful gifts and treats
Maureen Williams, a dedicated Breast Cancer Support Worker at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Wirral, has launched an inspiring initiative called 'Hug in a Bag' to offer additional comfort and care to breast cancer patients during treatment.
A former nurse from Little Sutton, Maureen, known as Mo, fills the bags with thoughtfully selected items such as handheld fans, hot water bottles, lip balm, sweets, and complementary yoga sessions.
Each gift is designed to alleviate treatment side effects and provide emotional support.
These items are sustainably sourced, many from local companies, with financial backing from Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.
Hug in a Bag reflects Maureen's commitment to go above and beyond for those she supports, with each bag representing a 'big cuddle' from The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.
Initially available to patients on the Wirral, Maureen hopes to expand the project to other Clatterbridge sites in Liverpool and Aintree, reaching more patients.
The initiative received praise from Simon Bunting, Innovation Manager at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, who champions new ideas from staff, highlighting its potential to make a tangible impact.
Natalie Collins, a patient supported by Maureen, emphasised the importance of personal care elements, noting the profound benefit these bags can provide.
Mo's launch event for Hug in a Bag drew support from Liverpool and England legend John Barnes, who has backed her fundraising efforts.
Katrina Bury, Chief Executive of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, expressed gratitude for donors supporting the project, acknowledging its contribution to enhancing patient experiences.
Hug in a Bag is a testament to empathy, emotional intelligence, and the power of community support to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients.
