A 15-year-old girl is in a critical condition after getting into difficulties in the water at Formby beach on Bank Holiday Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Albert Road at around 3.30pm following reports concerning the girl's safety.

She was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Merseyside Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward who might have seen what happened.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Nuttall said: “We know that Formby beach was exceptionally busy on Bank Holiday Monday but I would appeal for anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information which could assist our enquiries to get in touch as a matter of urgency.

"Our officers and I would also like to offer our gratitude to the members of the public who came to the assistance of the 15-year-old girl and her family during such tragic circumstances on the beach.”

At present, it is believed the girl encountered difficulties while in the water, prompting members of the public to intervene and help.

Authorities and emergency services were swiftly notified, and the girl was transported to hospital.

Throughout the week, ongoing efforts will be made alongside partner agencies, including Sefton Council, National Trust, HM Coastguard, and RNLI, to ensure a safe environment for visitors enjoying the coastline and beaches.

Authorities stress the importance of responsible parking to allow emergency services access to incident sites.

They also urge visitors to check tidal conditions and heed lifeguard advice before entering the water.
