A massive fire overnight has destroyed one of Liverpool's oldest buildings.

Plumes of smoke could be seen across the South of the city, as crews tackled the blaze at Grade 1 listed Woolton Hall, a manor house which dates back to 1704.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the scene at around 8.09pm last night (Tuesday 19 August), with dozens of firefighters, 9 fire engines and an aerial appliance used to tackle the blaze at its peak. The building was deemed unsafe for crews to enter.

People were asked to avoid the area, with nearby residents instructed to keep doors and windows closed.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to get underway today (Wednesday 20 August).
