A 62-year-old Everton woman this afternoon (Wed) admitted killing her long-time partner.

Gillian Shaw had previously denied murdering Steven John Cox but today the lesser charge of unlawful killing was put to her and she pleaded guilty to the offence. The murder charge has been dropped.

Shaw was arrested at her home in Rothwell Street on New Year’s Eve last year after she called the police just after 4 pm reporting an incident involving her partner of 37 years.

When they arrived they found her 63-year-old partner Steven John Cox had suffered a number of injuries. He was taken to hospital where he sadly died in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Shaw, who was due to stand trial next week, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via video link from Styal prison.

Judge Denis Watson, KC, who said she faces a lengthy sentence notwithstanding her plea to the lesser charge, further remanded her in custody until July 18 to enable a pre-sentence to be prepared.
