Drug driver sentenced after causing tractor to crash into Chester homes

Police say it was 'pure chance' that no-one was seriously injured

A drug driver who caused a tractor to career into homes in Chester has avoided jail.

Matthew Cumpsty, 52, of Oldfield Drive, Great Boughton, was driving his Mercedes on Green Lane in April 2025 at around 6:30am when he ran a red light and drove into the path of a JCB, which had been travelling out of Chester.

That caused the tractor to veer off path and into homes at the side of the road.

Two properties suffered serious structural damage, but there were no reports of any injuries.

Cumpsty was arrested at the scene after failing a roadside drugs swipe

A toxicology report later revealed that he was over the limit for benzoylecgonine (cocaine) with 65 micrograms per litre of blood, over the limit of 50 micrograms per litre.

He has been handed a 12-month community order, including 200 hours community service.

Cumpsty has also bee banned from driving for 16 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and £114 surcharge.
