David Moyes urges Everton to embrace European push ahead of derby
Toffees boss says chasing Europe is better than battling relegation
Everton manager David Moyes says his players should enjoy competing for European places rather than fighting relegation, as they prepare for a key Merseyside derby.
The Toffees host Liverpool in what will be the first derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Everton in a stronger position than in recent seasons.
A win could move them to within two points of their rivals.
Focus on European ambition
Moyes said he wants his side to embrace the opportunity to challenge higher up the table.
He told a press conference: “Well, if they don’t rise to it, then I don’t know what they’d rise to.”
He added: “Over the years, if it’s having a last game of the season and avoiding relegation, then that’s nothing to celebrate, really.”
Moving away from relegation battles
Everton have spent recent campaigns battling to stay in the Premier League.
But Moyes says the focus should now be on competing for bigger targets.
“I don’t think you can be a team in the relegation zone and just surviving,” he said.
“I think you can celebrate winning trophies or challenging for Europe, so I hope they can enjoy this side of it rather than the side we’ve seen before.”
The upcoming match against Liverpool carries added importance, with both local rivals competing near each other in the table.
Moyes’ side have the chance to close the gap and strengthen their position in the race for European football.
The Everton manager says he wants his players to approach the challenge with confidence and focus on performance.
