CCTV pictures released after alleged racist attack in Liverpool

Detectives have released CCTV images after a man was left with a skull fracture and brain injury following an assault in Liverpool city centre.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was found unconscious after reportedly being punched in the face near the junction of Fleet Street and Hanover Street.

Police said the attack happened at around 6.30am on Saturday 23rd May and is being treated as a suspected hate crime.

The man spent two weeks in hospital and has been left with a speech impediment as a result of his injuries.

Police release CCTV images

Merseyside Police said extensive CCTV and witness enquiries have been carried out as officers continue their investigation.

Detectives have now released images of a man they believe may have information which could assist enquiries.

Police said it was reported that the offender used a racial slur before assaulting the victim.

Detective Inspector Joe Rea said: “This was a dangerous and reckless attack which left the victim seriously injured from the unprovoked attack.

“The victim required extensive hospital treatment, and he now has a speech impediment from his brain injury.

“We believe this incident to be racially motivated, however we are exploring all lines of enquiry and would appeal to anyone who information to please contact us.

“Our enquiries are ongoing, and we are determined to find the person responsible.

“I am appealing to the man featured in the CCTV footage, or anyone who recognises him to come forward. We believe he could hold information that could be vital to our continuing enquiries.”

Det Insp Rea added: “In Merseyside, we believe that everyone should be able to live their lives without fear of being subjected to verbal or physical abuse.

“We are committed to tackling hate in our communities and would strongly encourage all victims to come forward and report such incidents.

“Where we identify a crime, we take firm action and offer the support of partner agencies to ensure the person reporting gets the assistance they need to feel safe.”
