Bootle man jailed after nearly £300,000 in cash found hidden in his car

A man from Bootle has been jailed after officers found nearly £300,000 in cash hidden in his car.
Philip Aryeetey, 55, of Tanhouse Road in Thornton, pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing criminal property (cash), possession of a controlled Class A drug (cocaine) with intent to supply, and possessing a prohibited firearm (taser).
He was sentenced to three years in prison.
On Friday 24th October 2025, Aryeetey was driving on the M57, near junction 5, when he was stopped by officers.
Following a search of his vehicle, they discovered a padlocked suitcase stashed underneath the driver's seat, which contained £299,440 in cash.
A search of his home was carried out, which led to the seizure of a further £2,000 in cash, as well as 65 grams of cocaine and a taser.
The investigation was carried out by officers from Merseyside Organised Crime Partnership – a joint Merseyside Police and National Crime Agency team dedicated to tackling serious and organised crime in the county.
Merseyside Police's Detective Chief Inspector Pete Stephenson said:
"This was a significant cash seizure and shows how our officers will leave no stone unturned when it comes to stopping people involved in organised crime.
"Aryeetey thought he could lock away nearly £300,000 in cash and we wouldn't find it. Sadly for him he's now locked up himself and will spend time in prison where he will have plenty of time to reflect on his actions.
"Organised crime is hugely damaging to our communities, often involving intimidation, violence and creating fear where criminals involved have no thought for anyone other than themselves.
"We will relentlessly target anyone who brings fear and harm to our communities, while safeguarding the innocent victims of their actions.
