RSPCA statistics reveal disturbing rise in animal cruelty incidents
RSPCA figures have revealed a concerning increase in reports of animal beatings in Merseyside, with a 10% rise in incidents last year compared to 2021.
A total of 415 cases were reported in Merseyside in 2025, up from 346 in 2021.
Across the country, the number of beatings reached a staggering 16,033 last year, almost doubling from 8,459 in 2021.
Animal welfare concerns are not limited to one pet type, as dogs and cats often face the brunt of violence, perpetrated by individuals within their own family.
According to the RSPCA, 85% of all animal cruelty complaints involve beatings, with a report received every 15 minutes.
These statistics were released as part of the RSPCA’s Cruelty Hurts, Love Rescues campaign, during a period where cruelty reports tend to peak over summer.
RSPCA Superintendent Comments on the Rise
RSPCA Superintendent Jo Hirst expressed concern over the rise in intentional beatings against animals, describing the distressing nature of these deliberate acts of violence.
“It’s incredibly distressing to see such a massive rise in reports of intentional beatings," Hirst said.
RSPCA officers rely heavily on public reports to tackle animal abuse, along with donations that support their frontline efforts.
“We’re grateful that so many people report their concerns to us," Hirst added, highlighting how technology like CCTV and smartphone footage is aiding investigations.
Notable Case Examples
Several cases have highlighted the severity of these incidents, such as a bull breed dog in Somerset subjected to a violent attack, and a doberman in London severely beaten, leading to head trauma and fractures.
Cases in East Sussex, Derbyshire, and Buckinghamshire have further illustrated the cruelty some animals face.
The RSPCA emphasised the importance of public involvement in reporting such cases and supporting their ongoing campaign to rescue animals and bring perpetrators to justice.
