Work has officially started today (17th March) on the North Hykeham Relief Road in Lincolnshire.

The five-mile dual carriageway will link the A46 at Pennells Roundabout to the Lincoln Eastern Bypass.

It'll create a complete ring around Greater Lincoln.

The road has been in the works since 2005 and is expected to take over three years to build, with its completion date set for Summer 2029.

Council response

"It'll reduce congestion in the Lincoln area and provide East West connectivity", Sam Edwards, Head of Highways at Lincoln County Council said.

Councillor Sean Matthews, Leader of Lincolnshire County Council, said the road will "make it much easier for people to get around the area and will play a vital role in supporting Lincolnshire’s future growth.

“This road will offer huge economic benefits when it’s finished, including opening up land for 4,500 homes and 7 hectares of employment space. It will also contribute £800 million in economic benefits for the county over the next 60 years."

Costs

The projected cost of the road is between £203 million and £218 million.

£110 million was allocated for the project in November 2020 from the Department for Tranport's 'Large Local Majors' programme.
