Villages must prepare themselves for floods say Lincolnshire group

We're been hearing from a local flooding group six months on from a major incident being declared in Lincolnshire.

Grantham, Bourne and many of the surrounding villages in South Lincolnshire were badly flooded in January.

Fifty primary school children had be rescued from Edenham, near Bourne.

Sarah Hobbs is from Pointon and says Lincolnshire villages must start preparing for future incidents now, "The human cost is massive, not just the financial cost," she said.

"The human cost of being displaced from your home, from losing everything that you've had.

"It's just not worth it, particularly when there are solutions.

"The cost of flood prevention measures are far outweighed by the chance of deluging hundreds of homes.

"In times when there's a big emergency, the emergency services will be stretched, and if you can't help yourself, then they might not be able to get to you, which will then exacerbate the problem."

Sarah is part of a flooding forum in Pointon. Their goal is to ensure the village is prepared for the next time it floods.

"On the more sort of proactive side - when it happens - because it will happen again, we have flood equipment.

"Flood barrier signs, sandbags and high vis vests and walkie talkies and all sorts of things that will help us on the day."

We've also been speaking to Kelly Saunby, a Boston based vet who's home was devasted by January's floods.

Kelly and her seven dogs have been living in a building site since January.

"My insurance doesn't cover any flood damage, which meant we were liable for all the repairs of the house," said Kelly.

"It has definitely taken a mental toll. I don't think I've ever ever cried so much in my life, and there have been days where I just thought I cannot be bothered to do anything anymore.

"We had a little bit of savings, which paid for a little bit, butup to now, it's probably almost 20,000 that I've had to borrow.

"The fact of the matter is it's still not finished."
