A bid has been submitted for Scunthorpe to become the UK Town of Culture 2028.

The government initiative aims to honour towns for their cultural contributions and provides communities with a platform to showcase them.

North Lincolnshire Council says their proposal centres on visible changes across neighbourhoods - such as bringing empty units back into use, filling parks with activity, and young people leading projects.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We know there are challenges – every town has them – but there is real strength in the communities across Scunthorpe, and that’s what this bid is built on.

“This is the start of the journey. We’re putting our hat in the ring and making the case for Scunthorpe on a national stage.

“We want people to get behind this, to take part and to help tell the story of the place they live – because the best stories about Scunthorpe come from the people who know it best.”

The deadline for towns to enter is 31st March.

The winning town will receive £3m to support their cultural program for the summer of 2028.

The two runner-up towns will each be granted £250,000.

A shortlist for the UK Town of Culture is expected in June.
