A 46-year-old man has appeared in court charged with damaging a historic Roman wall in Lincoln.

Jason James, who appeared by video link from HMP Lincoln, pleaded not guilty to criminal damage to a scheduled ancient monument.

The ancient monument next to City Hall in Lincoln was damaged overnight between August 23 and 24, 2025.

Mr James spoke to confirm his name at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning (March 12), and to deny the charge.

A trial date has been set for June 26.

City of Lincoln Council said at the time: “We are shocked and saddened to report that a mindless act of vandalism took place outside City Hall overnight, resulting in significant damage to the Roman wall at the rear of the building.”

The wall, between the car parks on Beaumont Fee, is currently surrounded by security fencing as the council looks at repairing the damage.
