The company behind a bid to buy the former RAF Scampton site says it wants more information about why its offer was rejected.

Scampton Holdings says it was told on 18 September that its bid had been unsuccessful.

Its proposal included more than 30 agreements with defence industry businesses, as well as plans to keep the runway and airfield operational, subject to approval.

An independent appraisal commissioned by Scampton Holdings and West Lindsey District Council estimated the plans could generate around £3 billion in economic and social benefits over 15 years.

The company says those figures are based on its proposed development.

Scampton Holdings is asking the Home Office for more information about how the bids were assessed and whether the successful proposal will protect the site's runway, aviation heritage and future economic potential.

The company's directors said: "We are deeply disappointed that our bid has been unsuccessful. Our proposals combine substantial defence industry engagement with a commitment to protect Scampton's aviation heritage and secure its future as an operational airfield."

They added: "The important question is how the chosen proposal will realise the site's full potential for industry, for local communities and for the country."
