Plans for a new woodland near Lincoln which will be open to the public are moving closer.

Forestry England is developing at least five new woods across Lincolnshire, which is the least forest-covered area in the East Midlands.

The project being planted at North Carlton, just north of Lincoln, would be the size of more than 400 football pitches.

Forestry England has applied for a new public road to be created off Tillbridge Lane for the public to enjoy the nature in future.

Other woods are being created at Hagworthingham on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, Cadney in North Lincolnshire, and Mickleholme and Newball in West Lindsey.

Planning documents say: “Forestry England are expertly creating a new woodland in Lincolnshire with a wider project to deliver 854ha of woodland across the county due to Lincolnshire being the least wooded county in the East Midlands.

“This includes the new 295ha woodland on land at North Carlton.

“This woodland will provide a new green space for public use, whilst also being a valuable habitat for wildlife and producing sustainable timber for a greener economy.

“Once the woodland is established, Forestry England will dedicate it under the Countryside Rights of Way Act enabling the public to explore the site.”

Planting at North Carlton began in spring with a mixture of broadleaf and conifer trees, which will help to capture carbon and provide habitats for wildlife.

Forestry England also says improved access to the woodland will increase people’s health and wellbeing.

The woodland will also be used as a sustainable source of timber, which it says is “vital for the UK’s green economy”.

Less than four percent of Lincolnshire is covered in woodland – one of the lowest rates in the country.

Forestry England are currently holding a consultation on plans for the 102-hectare woodland near the Lincolnshire Wolds, which can be found on their website.
