North East Lincs set to miss Government food waste deadline by a year

Council now targeting Spring 2027 for weekly collections, despite national target being this March

Households in North East Lincolnshire won’t get weekly food waste collections until Spring 2027 - nearly a year after the Government’s target date of March 2026.

North East Lincolnshire Council says it has made progress on the scheme, awarding a £5.9 million contract to Dennis Eagle Ltd for a new fleet of specialist waste vehicles.

Residents will eventually receive indoor food caddies and outdoor containers, with new trucks able to collect food waste separately from other rubbish.

The council is also working on route optimisation, meaning bin collection days could change for some households.

A council spokesperson said it is still procuring contractors for route planning and caddy delivery, adding: “The council is working towards an implementation date of Spring 2027 for the household food waste collections.”

The authority previously estimated the new service could divert between 4,000 and 5,500 tonnes of waste into recycling each year.

North East Lincolnshire is far from alone - around a third of councils in England are also expected to miss the Government’s March deadline.
