Residents and visitors in North East Lincolnshire are invited to celebrate World Environment Day on 5th June 2026 by appreciating and protecting the area’s natural wonders.

This region boasts spectacular landscapes, including coastal ecosystems, nature reserves, saltmarshes, and sand dunes, supporting diverse wildlife and serving essential roles in flood defence and climate resilience.

The DUNE project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is a key initiative that enhances awareness of the region’s protected coastal sites, encouraging responsible interaction with these environments. By minimising disturbance to habitats and species, the project ensures the conservation of vital ecological assets.

The coastline of North East Lincolnshire is not only a refuge for migratory birds but also an attraction for wildlife enthusiasts, contributing to the broader UK ecological network. Successful habitat management is achieved through collaboration between the local council, conservation organisations, and community groups.

North East Lincolnshire Council spearheads various environmental protection projects, including improving recycling services, supporting biodiversity efforts, managing green spaces, and fostering sustainable travel.

Local initiatives, such as tree planting campaigns and coastal management programmes, along with promoting public engagement in reducing environmental impact, further strengthen these efforts.

This World Environment Day, residents are encouraged to participate by engaging in simple actions, such as reducing waste, supporting conservation activities, and responsibly enjoying natural spaces.

Josh Forrester, Cleethorpes Coastal Ranger, leads regular nature walks to help individuals connect with the local environment. He emphasised the importance of collective responsibility: “North East Lincolnshire is incredibly fortunate to have such a rich and diverse natural environment. World Environment Day is a chance for all of us to reflect on the role we can play in protecting it.”

Forrester added, “Whether it’s supporting projects like DUNE, caring for our coastline, or making greener choices at home, every action counts.”
