A Lincolnshire mother who lost her daughter to domestic abuse is urging anyone at risk this Christmas to seek support, as charities warn incidents often rise during the festive period.

Annette Bramley’s daughter, Holly, was killed by her husband in 2023. Annette says it’s vital people remain alert to warning signs and speak up if they are worried.

“Be very, very vigilant. Look out for the red flags. Look out for signs of cruelty or coerced behaviour. Don't be afraid to just seek out help,” she says.

The festive season can be a particularly difficult time for victims, with added pressures and fewer opportunities to reach out.

Annette is encouraging people to access specialist support services online, including local charity EDAN Lincs, which can be reached discreetly.

She also highlights that help can be sought in other safe ways, including at pharmacies.

Annette says victims don’t have to know exactly where to turn - starting a conversation can be enough.

“Tell somebody. Tell a relative. Tell a work colleague. Somebody you know,” she says.

Alongside her Christmas message, Annette continues to campaign for Holly’s Law - a proposed register for people with a known history of animal abuse that partners can check.

She says animal cruelty is a serious warning sign that is often overlooked.

“Animal abuse is a big red flag for domestic abuse,” she says, "the link between domestic abuse and animal abuse is is far greater than anybody realises.”

Annette hopes the proposed law could work in a similar way to Clare’s Law, helping people access vital information before entering a relationship.

She adds: “Let's make domestic abuse everybody's business.”
