Lincoln is among the locations reporting a significant number of energy theft cases, with new data revealing 50 instances of theft and underscoring the dangers associated with this illegal activity.

Across the UK, energy theft has risen steeply, increasing by 23% in the last five years, with a total of 21,354 confirmed cases in the 2025/26 period.

Most cases involve domestic theft, accounting for 17,607 instances. The act of bypassing meters or tampering with energy equipment is not only illegal—it poses genuine safety risks, including fires, gas leaks, and electrocution.

The issue of energy theft extends beyond the act itself, often linked to wider criminal activities such as cannabis cultivation, illegal subletting, and exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

To combat this, the charity Crimestoppers has launched the 'Unknown Danger' campaign through Stay Energy Safe, aimed at exposing the serious implications of energy theft and correcting the perception that it is a victimless crime.

Annette Boyson from Crimestoppers said: "It's not just the person who's stealing the energy that is at risk, it's everyone in their home and it's communities around that particular property".

She continues to say: "people are looking for extreme ways to stay afloat".

The campaign offers the public a safe and anonymous route to report suspected cases of energy theft without the need to provide their name or evidence of a crime.

Encouragingly, reports of suspected theft are on the rise, with 13,779 individuals highlighting suspicious activities last year—a 79% increase over the previous five years.

Stay Energy Safe forwards these suspicions to energy companies for investigation, working towards prevention and community safety.

A spokesperson from Stay Energy Safe will offer insights into the rise in energy theft, its associated risks, and the importance of the 'Unknown Danger' campaign to increase public awareness.

Lincoln's reported cases spotlight the urgent need for vigilance and highlight the risks posed by energy theft amid broader national trends.
