Lincoln College named national defence hub - “huge opportunity” for jobs and training

One of just five UK centres will help fast-track people into careers in aerospace, engineering and digital defence

Lincoln College says its new role as a national defence training hub is a “huge opportunity” for both local people and employers, opening the door to a new generation of high-skilled careers.

The College has been selected as one of just five Defence Technical Excellence Colleges (DTECs) across the UK.

The designation will see it lead a network of regional providers and work directly with defence companies to design training that meets real industry demand.

Courses are expected to focus on areas like aerospace engineering, aviation, digital defence technologies and advanced manufacturing, with a clear pathway into roles across the armed forces and wider defence supply chain.

Mark Taylor, Director of Business Development and Partnerships at Lincoln College Group, says the timing reflects growing national demand.

“The government have focused on what they believe are key priority sectors for the country - and one of those is defence, especially with everything that's going on in the world at the moment.”

He says the aim is to create a pipeline of workers who are ready to step straight into roles.

“What they’re keen to do… is to try and develop job-ready employees for the sector to fill skills gaps and to enable them to grow as effectively as they can.”

Lincoln College was chosen as one of only five hubs nationwide, something Taylor says is a significant moment for the area.

The move builds on a long-standing partnership with the Royal Air Force and the College’s Air and Space Institute in Newark, as well as links with more than 100 defence employers across the region.

Taylor says working closely with industry will be key, ensuring courses evolve alongside the needs of modern defence.

And he’s encouraging people to explore the opportunities now opening up.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the employers in the defence sector and their supply chain in the region, and it’s a great opportunity for our residents as well.”

The College says the new status will help create a clear, fast-track route into well-paid, highly skilled careers — while strengthening the UK’s long-term defence capability.
