Grimsby council moves forward with demolition of former YMCA building for safety reasons
Costs to be recovered after structural report urges action
North East Lincolnshire Council has announced plans to demolish the former YMCA building on Peaks Lane, Grimsby, following continued safety concerns. Council Leader, Cllr Oliver Freeston, revealed the decision amid unsuccessful negotiations with the landowner to secure a solution for the site.
The council’s move comes after a structural engineer’s report recommended the building's demolition due to persistent arson attacks and vandalism. Previously arranged around-the-clock security was withdrawn, leaving the site vulnerable and prompting the council to act in partnership with Humberside Police to monitor and safeguard the public.
Cllr Freeston stated, “In these circumstances, this is the very best outcome for the people here in North East Lincolnshire. We are acting in the interests of safety, and for the residents and organisations that have had to put up with this concern for far too long."
The building, comprising a multi-storey concrete block, sports hall, and connected facilities, has been empty since the YMCA relocated to Freeman Street in 2021. Once the 4.4-acre site is cleared, the council aims to find a suitable new use for the land.
Efforts continue to recover the costs associated with the demolition, ensuring that the council's actions benefit local residents and enhance public safety.
