Grantham community gardens revitalised through social value commitment
Sheltered housing benefits from sustainable makeover initiative
The community gardens at Sandon Close, Grantham, have received a vibrant makeover, enhancing the environment for tenants and visitors through a collaborative initiative with sustainability experts.
Located near the community centre, these gardens were in need of refurbishment—a need addressed by local resident Agnes Kelly and her partner in partnership with sustainable energy firm Equans.
Equans, known for their role in decarb retrofits to council housing, contributed to the transformation of the communal gardens during one of their volunteering days, resulting in a renewed sense of ownership among residents.
The project originated from a community meeting on 22nd July, where feasibility and sustainability plans were discussed using the council’s Social Value fund.
Tenant Engagement Officer Keith Randall praised the collaboration: “This project shows the true value of tenant-led engagement, and excellent contractor relations when it comes to achieving positive outcomes in South Kesteven.”
The rejuvenated gardens now boast low-maintenance flower beds, anti-weed membranes, and newly planted shrubs, reflecting the commitment to sustainable, community-driven development.
As tenants begin to enjoy their refreshed surroundings, the successful initiative serves as a blueprint for future projects aimed at bringing beneficial change to communities through active resident involvement.
