Gainsborough prepares to glow as Illuminate festival returns
Lanterns, light projections and a spectacular fire garden promise a magical night for the whole community
Gainsborough is set to glow this Saturday, 21 February, as Illuminate returns for an evening of colour, creativity and community spirit.
The free winter festival runs from 6pm to 8pm across Gainsborough Old Hall and All Saints Parish Church, with thousands expected to attend.
Organiser Isabelle McPherson, Cultural Development Manager at West Lindsey District Council, says Illuminate is “a free and really welcoming light night - it’s a chance for everyone to come together, enjoy something magical, and celebrate our community.”
The evening begins with a lantern parade, featuring creations made in workshops with local schools and community groups, followed by artistic projections on the Old Hall and a dramatic fire garden at All Saints.
McPherson describes the fire garden as “taking over an outdoor space with sculpture, pyrotechnics and performances… it is a huge spectacle.”
Now running for almost a decade, Illuminate began as part of commemorations linked to the Mayflower Pilgrims, and has grown into a much-loved annual event.
This year’s theme, Through the Window, draws inspiration from Gainsborough’s iconic buildings while exploring ideas of inclusion and belonging.
And it’s not just about the show on the night. McPherson says the build-up matters too:
“It’s hugely important not only for the people who are involved in workshops and get to see their work celebrated, but also for the wider community who come along and soak up the atmosphere.”
Illuminate takes place Saturday from 6pm. Admission is free.
