Free renewables training scheme aims to help workers win more business

Courses in solar panels, EV chargers and heat pumps are open until the end of June

People across Northern Lincolnshire are being encouraged to apply for a new wave of fully-funded clean energy training courses before applications close at the end of June.

The scheme offers training in areas including solar panels, EV chargers and heat pump systems — with places open to both experienced tradespeople looking to upskill and people wanting to retrain from scratch.

But Stacey Hewitt from GTEC Training says the courses are about far more than renewable energy alone.

“This is not necessarily about the clean energy itself,” she said. “It’s about how using something in renewable supports economic growth.”

She says many electricians and plumbers are already being asked by customers about new technologies — but often have to turn work away or pay subcontractors because they lack the qualifications themselves.

“So it’s basically finding that gap with a local business or a sole trader… to give them the skills they need to get themselves a future security,” she explained.

Stacey says the funding also removes some of the financial pressure that can come with retraining.

“What this fund allows customers to do… is avoid the reinvestment into re-recruitment,” she said. “They can get more value from their current set of employees and current staff.”

The training is open to people living in North and North East Lincolnshire, or those who have worked in the area within the last two years.
