Emergency works are taking place in Gainsborough after a sinkhole led to the discovery of an unsafe road structure.

Ropery Road is expected to be closed for around seven days while works are carried out.

Lincolnshire County Council say there's a problem with the sub-base beneath the road which requires immediate attention.

Engineers were initially called out to a sinkhole, but inspections revealed additional work was needed and the road was deemed unsafe.

The council has acknowledged the disruption this will cause to residents and to those travelling to Mercer's Wood Academy, and says it aims to complete the works as quickly as possible.

A diversion route is in place: South on Ropery Road / West on A156 Ashcroft Street / North on A159 Trinity Street / West on C214 Front Street / South on Ropery Road and vice versa.

For those who live on Ropery Road, a temporary footpath will be put in place.

Cars will not be able to park on the road as works are ongoing.
