A search is on for Stamford’s next Poet Laureate - giving one local writer the chance to become the town’s official poetic voice.
The competition is running alongside Stamford’s popular Verse Festival, which returns this spring with a packed programme of performances, workshops and spoken word events.
Organisers are inviting poets of all levels to submit an original piece - along with their vision for how they’d use the role to support and grow poetry in the community.
The winner will take on the honorary title for a year, representing Stamford at civic events and open mic nights, while working with the Arts Centre and Town Council to make poetry more accessible.
Arts Programme Officer Karen Burrows said shortlisted entrants will be invited to perform their work live at the final in April.
“We’re inviting candidates to write a poem on any theme… and share what they’d like to achieve during their year as Poet Laureate,” she said.
The final will take place at the popular Pint of Poetry night at Stamford Arts Centre on Wednesday 29 April.
Councillor Paul Stokes says Stamford has become a “beating heart” for poetry in the district — with regular spoken word events and a growing creative scene.
“It’s a staple for performance and open mic nights… and whoever wins will have a fun year of events to enjoy,” he said.
This year’s Verse Festival also features big names from the poetry world - including Roger McGough - alongside workshops, walking tours and panel events.
Entries for Poet Laureate open on 1 April and close at midday on 20 April.
