A parliamentary committee has endorsed North Lincolnshire Council's call for an urgent and credible plan to secure the future of British Steel, with particular focus on the Scunthorpe steelworks.

The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee highlighted governmental intervention that prevented the closure of blast furnaces, preserving primary steelmaking capabilities and stabilising the workforce and supply chain.

However, the committee cautioned that the intervention bought time rather than providing a lasting solution, stressing the need for decisive investment and clear operational plans.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, underscored the importance of converting governmental support into tangible improvements and future planning for steelmaking in Scunthorpe.

Cllr Waltham remarked, "The committee has now confirmed what we have consistently told government: uncertainty cannot continue and hundreds of millions of pounds cannot simply be spent sustaining the present position. That support must be converted into investment, modernisation and a credible future for steelmaking in Scunthorpe."

The committee calls for comprehensive government strategy detailing British Steel's financial sustainability, production and decarbonisation models, costs, and implications of continued public ownership.

It recommends collaboration with North Lincolnshire Council and involvement of stakeholders to assess the future of the Scunthorpe site, ensuring secure employment and engagement with trade unions.

The report outlines proposals for a steelmaking and advanced manufacturing cluster at Scunthorpe, aiming for new investment while managing workforce transitions and skills protection.

The committee urges prompt governmental action, warning of the increasing cost of delay and the risk of falling behind global steel industry advancements.
