Lincolnshire roofers fined over £4.5k for fly-posting in York

A Lincolnshire roofing company has been ordered to pay more than £4,500 after refusing to take down advertising signs in York.
BastFix Roofing and Gutters Ltd, which is registered in Spalding, has been fined £4,589.04 after it was found guilty of fly-posting.
City of York Council said officers first spotted the company's signs attached to signposts and railings in November 2025.
The council emailed and sent letters to the company, saying the signs needed to be taken down within seven days.
They also sent reminders and extended the deadline over the Christmas period.
The signs weren't taken down.
When officers called the phone number on the signs, a company representative said he wouldn't remove them because he believed the law was "unfair".
The signs were still in place in January, so the council removed them and issued three £500 fixed penalty notices.
After the fines went unpaid and the company failed to respond to further letters, the case was taken to court.
No-one from BastFix attended the hearing on 8 July.
The company was fined £2,500, ordered to pay £1,089.04 in costs and a £1,000 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £4,589.04.
Cllr Jenny Kent, Executive Member for Environment at City of York Council, said:
“Posting any sign to the highway without consent is a criminal offence. The court has taken this seriously with the scale of fine.
"Fly-posting is dangerous as it can cause distraction to road users, obstructs visibility and can obscure important information, as well as creating a hazard during installation and removal."
