A new Grantham salon is transforming haircuts for children with additional needs
Powered by patience and understanding, this inclusive salon is already attracting families from across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire
A new hairdressers has opened in Grantham designed especially for children with additional needs and those who normally struggle getting a haircut.
The Little Rodeo Saloon offers hour-long appointments, private sessions, a large play area - but most importantly, patience.
For three-year-old Fred, who is autistic, haircuts are usually overwhelming. But during his visit with mum Katie, the experience was noticeably different.
“My little one isn’t that keen on a haircut, and straight away we were offered an hour-long appointment - which was great, because that’s what Fred needs,” she said.
The country-and-western themed salon is run by owner Chesney Scott, who says the idea came directly from her own life.
“The inspiration actually comes quite close from the heart,” she explained.
“I have two children with additional needs, and I really struggled to get their haircut.
"It got to the point where friends and family were bringing their little ones to my house, because I was used to the struggle.”
“We give extra time, and we also offer private slots, so it’s not too busy and children don’t get overwhelmed,” said Chesney.
“The main thing is patience. If there’s a queue, it makes the parent feel pressured, the child feel pressured - and me feel pressured too.”
Word is spreading quickly.
Families are already travelling from Lincoln, Nottingham, Bingham, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Sleaford and Spalding for an appointment.
Chesney says that commitment from parents shows just how much the service is needed.
“There’s nothing quite like this elsewhere,” she added.
The salon hopes its gentle, flexible approach will continue to make a real difference - turning what can be a stressful experience into something children and parents can finally feel comfortable with.
