Ribble Valley Council has unveiled its updated priorities in a new corporate plan, aimed at harnessing tourism successes linked to the 2027 Tour de France cycle race while advocating for greater emphasis on local arts and culture.

The highly anticipated Tour de France Grand Depart will traverse Lancashire, including the Ribble Valley, in July 2027.

The council aims to support town and village projects that benefit from the race's legacy through financial grants.

Discussed at the council's Policy & Finance Committee, the plan includes funding initiatives for community projects, improvements to leisure and sports facilities, business support, and flood protections for homes.

Councillor Karl Barnsley from Labour expressed dissatisfaction with the limited mention of arts and culture in the report, advocating for increased emphasis on these sectors.

Council leader Simon Hore assured that developing an arts and culture strategy is part of the plan.

Conservative councillors highlighted the importance of preserving the Ribble Valley's identity and boosting health and well-being services.

Ribblesdale Pool in Clitheroe is undergoing a £4m renovation for six months to extend its lifespan, while essential repairs are underway at Clitheroe Castle, another council-owned asset.

Cash grants for sports pitches, playgrounds, and leisure projects are also being contemplated, utilizing both council and Westminster funds.

Additional priorities include environmental conservation, economic development, housing support, and maintaining effective council services.

The corporate plan received committee backing and is set for further discussion at a full council meeting.
