Easter weekend tram disruption planned for Greater Manchester improvements
Major works to impact Trafford and Altrincham lines; replacement buses provided
Tram services across Greater Manchester will face disruptions over the Easter weekend as essential improvement works are conducted at Deansgate-Castlefield and Trafford Bar.
From Friday 3rd to Monday 6th April 2026, track renewal work will also take place between Timperley and Stretford, reducing future closure needs on the Altrincham line.
Service changes and replacement options
During the works, trams will be suspended on the Eccles, Trafford Centre, and Altrincham lines.
Services on the East Didsbury/Manchester Airport lines will terminate at Firswood, while Rochdale line services will conclude at Exchange Square. Adjustments will also impact Bury - Ashton-under-Lyne and Bury/Victoria - Etihad Campus services.
Replacement buses will operate between affected stops, honoring tickets valid for all tram zones as well as 1-day Bee Bus tickets (adult, child, family).
Tram services are scheduled to resume normally from Tuesday 7th April.
Coordination for convenience
Ian Davis, Network Director at Metrolink Transport for Greater Manchester, explained the decision to consolidate multiple works over the Easter period:
“We’re conscious that we will be disrupting a lot of journeys, but it's better to disrupt them in one go rather than over several weekends. We do it all once, we do it all right, and then we're back open again."
Passengers are thanked for their patience during this period, with the disruptions aimed at ensuring a more reliable Metrolink system as part of the B network improvements.
