A man has been jailed for seven and a half years after stabbing a Haydock resident during an aggravated burglary.

Aaron Carney, 24, of Abbey Road, in Haydock, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today (Wednesday 14 October) after admitting aggravated burglary and section 18 grievous bodily harm.

At around 2.25am on Monday 20 April 2026, it was reported that a man aged in his 50s had woken up in his bedroom on Bluebell Avenue to see a burglar, now known to be Carney, rummaging through his belongings.

Following a confrontation, Carney stabbed and slashed him with a bladed weapon, causing injuries to his shoulder, face and stomach. The intruder then fled the house on foot.

An investigation was carried out, which included CCTV and forensic inquiries, that led to the arrest of Carney. His DNA had been found at the house and the victim’s blood was on Carney’s trainers.

Detective Inspector Kevin O’Rourke said: “This was a shocking burglary carried out by a man who clearly had no regard for anyone inside the home. Carney was clearly intent on taking what didn’t belong to him and wasn’t going to let anyone stand in his way.

“An investigation found his DNA at the scene of the crime and also the victim’s blood was identified on his trainers. Carney simply had no choice but to admit his involvement due to the sheer weight of evidence produced against him.

“I hope the sentencing of Carney can bring some comfort to the victim. I also want to take this opportunity to reassure the wider community that incidents of this nature are extremely rare.

“This result shows the extensive work that our officers and staff carry out to put offenders before the courts. CCTV and doorbell devices can often be the key to successful investigations, so I’d keep encouraging anyone who captures offences or people acting suspiciously to come forward and we can make an assessment and take action.”
