As colder weather approaches, Lancashire's highways teams are undertaking a significant maintenance programme to strengthen roads and prepare the network for winter, backed by a £10 million investment approved by the cabinet last month. The initiative aims to improve the resilience of the county's roads using extensive repairs and preventative measures.

Over 100,000 potholes have been repaired, and more than 1.16 million square metres of surface dressing have been applied since April. With the completion of resurfacing across 361,000 square metres and the cleaning of 74,153 gullies, the roads are better equipped to handle heavy rainfall and seasonal challenges.

County Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, acknowledged the efforts, stating "Our highways teams have worked incredibly hard throughout the spring and summer ... combining repairs, resurfacing and preventative maintenance, helping improve road condition and prepare the network for winter."

Recent assessments indicate positive progress, with 94.56% of Lancashire's A, B, and C roads in good or fair condition, exceeding targets for defect repairs and first-time fixes. The added investment brings total funding in the 2026/27 period to £88.9 million, ensuring continued improvement and preparation as winter approaches.
