Lancashire Police has introduced a new campaign, ‘Fake or Real? Know the Deal’, to address the escalating threat of deepfakes powered by artificial intelligence.

Designed to equip young people, parents, carers, and educators with the knowledge to safely navigate digital spaces, the campaign focuses on distinguishing between genuine and manipulated content.

Deepfakes utilise artificial intelligence to create altered images, videos, or audio that falsely depict individuals engaging in actions they never performed.

Assistant Chief Constable Stasia Osiowy of Lancashire Constabulary highlighted the significance of this initiative: "Keeping children safe is at the heart of everything we do, both online and offline. As technology evolves, the line between what is real and what is fake is becoming increasingly blurred, creating new challenges for young people, parents, carers, and educators."

She further stated: "Artificial intelligence brings many exciting opportunities, but it can also be misused. We are increasingly seeing AI used to create highly convincing fake content...Our message is simple: understand the risks, learn how to spot deepfakes, and have open conversations about staying safe online."

Following successful implementation by Essex Police, the campaign has expanded to three police forces across England, demonstrating strong national dedication to mitigating the impact of deepfake technology.

Stakeholders are encouraged to access advice, resources, and guidance on recognising deepfakes, reporting concerns, and ensuring online safety by visiting Lancashire Police's website.

Additionally, Nest Lancashire offers support for young people and families via their confidential and free service, reachable at 0300 111 0323.
