Lancashire gas safety chief warns of carbon monoxide dangers this summer
Summer holiday advice issued following high regional CO incidents
As summer holidays approach, Phil Hendrick, head of the gas emergency service in Lancashire, cautions residents about the invisible threat of carbon monoxide (CO).
Last summer witnessed 3,442 CO incidents across the North West, one of the highest figures in the country, linked to barbecues, pizza ovens, and camping equipment stored improperly.
Cadent, operating 24/7 gas emergency services in the region, offers critical advice amid the heatwave: ensure accommodations have CO alarms, and consider carrying portable detectors when traveling.
Hendrick highlights the insidious nature of CO, often dubbed the silent killer, as it requires detectors to be identified due to its undetectable presence.
CO poisoning symptoms resemble those of a cold or flu, including headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Hendrick recommends installing detectors in every room with fuel-burning appliances for safety.
"At the slightest suspicion of CO poisoning, vacate the area without delay and seek medical attention," emphasizes Hendrick, urging prompt action and detector installation.
