Network Rail has agreed to carry out a timetable analysis to work out whether a new railway station could be built in Coppull.

It marks the first concrete step in a long-running campaign to bring a station back to the Lancashire village.

The analysis will look at which services could call at a station and what service pattern could be achieved.

It is being funded by Chorley Council.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the MP for Chorley and Speaker of the House of Commons, has been campaigning for the station for some time.

He said his campaign has involved meetings with government ministers, Network Rail and officials from the Department for Transport.

"Whilst this does not represent the go-ahead, it is the first important step towards exploring the potential for a new station," Sir Lindsay said.

He also thanked Chorley Council for agreeing to fund the study.

"I believe residents of Coppull would benefit enormously from a railway station and with the support of local councillors and residents alike, I will continue to lobby for this project," he said.
