Fleetwood Police have intensified their efforts to combat shoplifting and retail crime through the implementation of Operation Vulture, a county-wide initiative led by Lancashire Constabulary.

The operation was established with the support of Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, and focuses on hotspot patrols, fostering partnerships with retailers, and sharing intelligence to better address and understand retail crime.

In Fleetwood, Operation Vulture has successfully led to the arrest and sentencing of two individuals for shoplifting.

Aidan Riches, aged 29, was apprehended on 19th September 2026, following reports from various Thornton-Cleveleys stores about thefts of items such as laundry detergent. Riches was charged with six shoplifting offences and sentenced to eight weeks in jail at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court on 21st September.

Connor Newsham, 28, was arrested on 6th October 2026, after CCTV footage linked him to four shoplifting offences between 5th and 18th September at stores including Co-Operative Food on Larkholme Parade and Home Bargains at Affinity Outlet, totalling a value of £270.

Newsham received a two-week custodial sentence after appearing before Lancaster Magistrates' Court on 7th October.

Sgt Andy Hill of Fleetwood Police emphasized the serious nature of shoplifting and its impact on both store workers and the community.

Hill encouraged stores in Wyre to report incidents to help accurately map the issue, allocate resources effectively, and curb offending.

Fleetwood Police continue to encourage vigilance and reporting, emphasizing immediate action through 999 for thefts involving violence or ongoing crimes.
