Police in Fylde have raided stables in Lytham after tip-offs about suspected organised cock-fighting.

Officers seized 27 cockerels and arrested two men on suspicion of animal welfare offences after the operation.

The force attended the site in Lytham on Monday (12 May) with the RSPCA.

"Enquiries remain ongoing"

In a statement, the force said: "On arrival, we discovered signs of organised cockfighting — including several makeshift pits.

"Due to the unusual nature of the incident, assistance was sought from a specialist exotic bird vet who is a dedicated cock handler, ensuring the welfare of the birds were prioritised.

"In total 27 cockerels were seized from the property some of which needed medical attention".

The two males were arrested at the location and have since been released under investigation.

Enquiries remain ongoing in partnership with the RSPCA.

The statement continued to say "Cockfighting is not only illegal but deeply cruel.

"We take a firm stance on rural crime – and we’re not afraid to go pecking around where needed. Whether its fly-tipping, livestock theft, or illegal animal fighting, the message is simple: if you’re up to no good in the countryside, expect a visit from us, we will ruffle some feathers!"
