A new dance and drama centre has been given the go ahead in the village of Catterall by Wyre planners.

It follows the submission of a planning application on behalf of Danceworx Preston and Garstang Ltd, an established dance and performing arts school operating throughout the Preston, Garstang and Wyre areas.

The troupe perform bi-yearly shows at Blackpool Opera House, involving cast members aged from two to 65 and featuring ballet, tap, jazz and much more.

The proposals, which were earmarked for Unit 5-6 at Ripon Hall Farm, on Catterall Lane in Catterall, will how give the business a permanent base.

The application lodged with planners was for the change of use from Class E(g)(iii) (Light Industrial) to Class E(d) (Indoor Sport, Recreation and Fitness) to form a dance and performing arts studio.

A Planning Statement on behalf of the applicants said: “Danceworx Preston & Garstang currently operates from multiple hired venues throughout the local area and has established a strong reputation for providing dance, performing arts and fitness tuition for children and adults.

“The business offers a wide range of activities including ballet, tap, modern, jazz, commercial dance, musical theatre, acro, preschool dance and adult fitness classes.

“The proposed facility will allow the business to operate from a permanent location, reducing reliance on multiple hired venues and creating a dedicated community facility.

“The proposed use will accommodate a maximum occupancy of approximately 50 persons at any one time.

It adds: “Classes will operate on a staggered timetable, naturally spreading arrival and departure times throughout the day and reducing peak parking demand.

“The development does not involve any external alterations to the building and the existing access arrangements and parking areas will continue to be utilised.”

Approving the application, the planning case officer stated in a delegated report: “The proposal would result in the continued occupation of an existing commercial unit and would not materially alter the appearance of the site or result in encroachment into the surrounding countryside.

“The existing commercial character of the wider business complex would be maintained. As such, the proposal would not adversely affect the open and rural character of the countryside and is considered consistent with the (planning) objectives of Policy SP4.”
