As the fourth anniversary of the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine is marked, the Chorley community demonstrates unwavering support for Ukraine amidst global commitments from leaders to stand by the war-torn nation.

A special remembrance service is scheduled for Tuesday, 24th February, at St. Mary’s Church in Chorley (PR7 2SR) at 6.30pm. Organized by Fr. Marsden, the service will include Chorley Churches Together, invited guests, local volunteers, and members of the Ukrainian community, featuring prayers in both English and Ukrainian.

Local and national solidarity

Stuart Clewlow, founder of the 'Ukraine Unit' donation centre in Chorley, speaks to the significant impact of community efforts in providing aid and a social hub for Ukrainian families.

"It has become a sort of social hub as well...We know that what we're doing is making a difference. Whether it's toys for children or medical aid for troops on the front line, we're making a difference," Clewlow said.

The 'Ukraine Unit', located at The White Hart, Mealhouse Lane, operates Wednesdays and Saturdays, collecting resources that help support Ukraine against unjustifiable aggression.

Commitment against global aggression

Sir Keir Starmer, Britain's Prime Minister, reiterated UK's support for Ukraine during a Cabinet address, emphasizing the importance of freedom and democracy.

"This is not a remote conflict...It's about our values of freedom, democracy and the right of a country to decide for itself," Sir Keir stated.

Recent sanctions placed by the UK aim to weaken Russia's ability to continue its aggression. Defence initiatives remain crucial amid mounting casualties and significant challenges faced by Russian forces.

While global efforts such as sanctions are advancing, local efforts represented by the Chorley community continue to contribute profoundly to Ukraine's resilience and spirit.

Public members are encouraged to attend the remembrance service in Chorley, demonstrating solidarity for the people of Ukraine in pursuit of peace.
