A Blackpool initiative designed to create safer spaces for the LGBTQ+ community is delivering impressive results, including the creation of new jobs and venues described as welcoming spaces for all.

Known as ‘Be You,’ the project has led to the establishment of 52 jobs and 15 new LGBTQ+ venues, contributing to a total of 29 LGBTQ+ friendly spaces across Blackpool.

Launched in January 2024, the initiative is part of a wider action plan supported by Blackpool Council and local organisations. It aims to create a vibrant and safe Rainbow Quarter in the town, where LGBTQ+ individuals can live, work, and socialise feeling empowered and respected.

The Be You Quality Marks

Two new certifications have been introduced as part of the initiative.

The Be You Business Quality Mark, developed in partnership with Renaissance charity and Blackpool Council’s Public Health team, accredits businesses such as bars, hotels, and shops that provide safe and welcoming environments for LGBTQ+ individuals. Accredited venues will display the mark, showcasing their commitment to inclusion.

The Be You Youth Provider Quality Mark, led by the United Youth Alliance, recognises organisations that support LGBTQ+ young people and focus on embedding inclusivity in their services.

Shaun Pickup, chair of the Blackpool Rainbow Alliance and community lead for the Be You group, said: "Be You is about creating real, visible change – not just words. The growth in venues, the creation of new jobs and the introduction of the Quality Marks all show growing confidence in Blackpool’s inclusive vision."

Transforming Blackpool’s Rainbow Quarter

Upgrades in Blackpool’s Rainbow Quarter are further supporting the initiative.

The northern town centre area has seen investments that include street signs, crossings decorated with Progress Pride flag colours, and brightly coloured planters designed by House of Wingz. Over 30 new lighting columns have been added to improve visibility and safety.

A new CCTV camera has been installed on Lord Street following feedback from residents and young people, and additional cameras are set to follow to monitor key routes.

The Blackpool Rainbow Alliance has also been established to provide support for LGBTQIA+ communities across Blackpool, Fylde, and Wyre.

Cllr Jo Farrell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing at Blackpool Council, said: “These developments reflect Blackpool’s commitment to creating an inclusive space for LGBTQ+ communities. We want this initiative to reflect the spirit of the town with every person feeling respected, valued, and free to be themselves.”
