Blackburn Rovers responds to fan calls for boycott ahead of Watford clash
The club has urged fans to show unity despite concerns over the team's form
Blackburn Rovers has addressed calls from fans for a boycott of Saturday’s game against Watford, urging supporters to back the team during a challenging time for the club.
In a statement, the club acknowledged the concerns expressed by sections of the fanbase about its current direction, while appealing for unity as Rovers aim to turn around their form and climb the table.
A club spokesperson said:
“Blackburn Rovers acknowledges that some supporters have spoken publicly about calls to boycott Saturday’s home fixture against Watford.
“The club recognises and respects the strength of feeling among sections of the fanbase and understands that supporters care deeply about the future of the club.
“However, at this crucial stage of the season, we firmly believe the team needs the full backing of its supporters, as we look to overcome what has been a challenging run of results.
“With a number of key players expected to return from injury over the coming weeks, the club remains confident the squad can deliver a stronger second half of the season – but achieving that progress will require the continued support of our fans.
“We therefore urge all Rovers supporters to show unity and support to the team, as we work collectively to climb the table and produce performances and results the fans can be proud of.
“We want to reassure all supporters attending Saturday’s match that all appropriate measures will be in place to provide a safe and welcoming environment at Ewood Park. The club would greatly appreciate your presence and support on the day.”
Fans express concerns
Some fans have voiced their frustration at the club’s performance and longer-term prospects. Speaking as part of the We are the Rovers supporters group, Jacob Ward shared concerns about the state of the club under its ownership, warning of a potential drop to League One.
“We’re well and truly in a relegation fight and unfortunately, it’s looking like we’re going to be on our way down to League One again for the second time under this ownership," Ward said.
“This is only a club that’s spent, I think, in its entire history, five years in the third division. We’ve never been in the fourth division of English football.”
Crucial match this weekend
Rovers hope to rally support when they face Watford at Ewood Park on Saturday in the Championship. Fans will be watching closely to see how the team performs in what could be a key match for their season.
