Anchorsholme beach sea defence project set to start
Works will begin on 26th January
Building works for a sea defence project in Blackpool are set to begin next week.
Works for the Anchorsholme Coast Protection Scheme will begin on 26th January 2026.
The scheme will see 5,000 properties protected from coastal erosion and flooding.
Five rock groynes will be built on Anchorsholme beach, and a rock revetment on top of the existing sloped seawall.
The groynes will trap sand and raise beach levels reducing the risk of flooding, whilst the rock revetment will strengthen the seawall.
Without the groynes, sand levels will continue to lower which can cause underlying clay to become exposed, as pictured below.
The Environment Agency is funding the £11 million construction of the rock groynes.
The rock revetment is being covered by contractors Balfour Beatty.
Princes Way will be closed from 27th January to 28th February 2026 at the junction with Queen’s Promenade.
Some on-street parking and cycle routes will be unavailable.
Pedestrian access will remain open.
