Traffic halted at Port of Dover due to protest by masked men

Traffic at the Port of Dover has come to a halt as a large group of masked demonstrators blocked major roads and roundabouts near the port early this morning.
Councillor Chris Vinson, leader of the Conservative group and member for Walmer on Dover District Council, described the situation: "Overnight, clearly what appears to be several hundred masked men wearing black clothing and balaclavas seem to have co-ordinated and loaded into rental vans and then descended on roads leading in and out of Dover with the intent to block them, and that’s what they’ve successfully done, bringing the town to a standstill."
Kent Police confirmed their awareness of the protest and reported active engagement with those gathered in the area.
Officers are present and communicating with the protesters to address the situation, which has led to significant traffic disruptions.
Councillor Vinson noted that the protest appears to be "illegal migration-related", although the demonstrators were not carrying placards or banners.
He added, "I’m not aware that there’s been any violence, although clearly, having the path of your vehicle blocked by men wearing black paramilitary gear and balaclavas is extremely intimidating."
The blocked roads have resulted in considerable inconvenience for commuters and residents, with many feeling unsafe and unsure of the protest's motives.
People working night shifts in the port have expressed concerns for their safety, and women in cars have reported feeling intimidated.
Traffic congestion has led to long queues on the A20 and other approach roads into Dover, leaving those caught in the disruption without basic facilities.
P&O Ferries, operating out of the port, advised travellers about restricted access, offering alternative sailings for those who miss their scheduled departure.
