Thanet's businesses invited to apply to trade on beaches
Applications open for a coastal trading licenses on Thanet’s beaches
Thanet council is inviting applications for seasonal business ventures on its beaches and bays for 2026.
Following a successful pilot programme in 2025, the council is expanding its initiative, encouraging a variety of local businesses to serve the coastline.
Opportunities range from ice cream trikes to yoga classes, aiming to enhance the beach experience for both locals and visitors.
The scheme incorporates several changes based on feedback from the last year. This includes a new 'zoned' pricing structure, with fees adjusted according to location demand. Margate Main Sands and Ramsgate are classified as Zone 1, while quieter spots like Minnis Bay and Stone Bay are in Zone 2.
Smaller bays such as Epple Bay and Dumpton Gap are included in Zone 3, offering more affordable options for smaller enterprises.
Incentives for local merchants
Councillor Ruth Duckworth, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Property, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasising the value added by traders during the pilot programme with offerings from wellness treatments to local culinary delights.
"We have listened to the feedback from our first year. By introducing zoned pricing and launching the application process earlier, we are making it easier for entrepreneurs to plan ahead. We are particularly keen to hear from businesses that share our commitment to the environment, as protecting our natural coastal beauty remains our top priority," Mrs Duckworth said.
Existing operators from last year’s pilot can reapply during a priority window, while new licences will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, contingent on approval.
Sustainability as a core principle
Sustainability is a central requirement for applicants, who must adhere to the district-wide ban on single-use plastics and provide waste management and recycling plans.
Prospective businesses can find full details on available locations, the new fee structure, and the application process on the council’s website.
All applications must be submitted by Friday, 13th March 2026.
Interested traders can access the application form and guidance online.
