Man jailed for 9 years for fatal assault in Ramsgate
The 68-year-old victim fell and hit his head after a single punch
A Ramsgate man has been jailed for nine years after an unprovoked single punch aimed at 68-year-old man outside a pub, resulted in his death.
Marshall Mitchell, 35, attacked Jim Castle on Harbour Street, Ramsgate, on the night of Friday 28th March 2025. The assault caused Mr Castle to fall and hit his head on the ground, resulting in traumatic brain injuries.
Emergency services attended the scene, but Mitchell had fled before they arrived. Mr Castle was taken to a hospital in London due to the severity of his injuries but passed away nearly three weeks later on 18th April.
Attacker identified through CCTV
Mitchell was identified as the attacker after investigators reviewed CCTV footage of the incident. He was arrested the following day on 29th March and was later charged with manslaughter.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Monday 1st December 2025 to nine years in prison.
Police statement
Detective Sergeant Dean Sycamore condemned the senseless act of violence, saying:
“This was a senseless act of violence that cost a man his life. A single punch led to irreversible consequences, leaving a family devastated and grieving."
He added:
“I welcome the sentence handed down by the court and hope it offers some measure of justice to the victim’s loved ones. This tragic incident serves as a reminder to others: a single moment of aggression can be fatal. Think before you act.”
