Medway boxer set to compete for world title this evening
21-year-old Moses Itauma will be fighting Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic tonight at the O2 in London
Moses Itauma, a 21-year-old boxing sensation from Chatham, is set to compete for the IBF heavyweight world title this weekend at the O2 Arena in London, with robust backing from his hometown of Medway.
Itauma takes on Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic after an undefeated 14-match streak, including victories over renowned competitors like Dillian Whyte and Jermaine Franklin.
Among those supporting him from are his former PE teachers at Greenacre Academy.
Former teacher Jack Gearey said:
"You're destined for greatness, just remember me when you get to the top"
While Sam Prescott, another PE teacher, added: "Really proud of everything you're doing supporting Medway"
Support for the boxer also extends beyond his old school grounds, as Medway Council leader Vince Maple and Louise Campbell, headteacher of Walderslade and Greenacre, have declared their support alongside enthusiastic pupils.
Maple stated, "Everyone’s behind you Moses, we know you’ve got this, bring that world heavyweight championship back to Medway."
While Campbell spoke of Itauma’s positive impact on the community and student admiration, stating, "We look forward to seeing you come and visit us again soon."
Many will be watching the match at a live watch party held by Chatham Town FC.
The match will take place this evening, with a result expected either late tonight or early tomorrow morning.
