A man who stabbed and killed his victim following a violent confrontation in Canterbury city centre has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

The altercation took place shortly before 11.30pm on 10th October 2024, and resulted in Mohammed Nour Hgar stabbing 23-year-old Samare Gerezgihir in the chest, causing fatal injuries.

Emergency services arrived quickly to the scene on Canterbury High Street but were unable to save the victim, who died in the early hours of 11th October.

The investigation

Detectives began a full investigation and used CCTV footage to establish that Hgar had come into contact with a group of men in the busy High Street, leading to a violent confrontation.

While no specific motive was disclosed, it was identified that Hgar and the victim had an ongoing conflict and knew each other prior to the attack.

After the stabbing, Hgar fled the area and changed his clothing in an attempt to avoid detection. He took a taxi to Herne Bay, where he was arrested at 5am on 11th October.

He was charged with murder on 14th October. During his trial at Canterbury Crown Court, Hgar admitted to manslaughter, claiming excessive self-defence. This was accepted by the court.

Sentencing

At Canterbury Crown Court on 4th December 2025, Hgar, who has no fixed address, was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Detective Inspector Colin McKeen said:

‘Today’s sentencing reflects the severity of this senseless attack and demonstrates the dire consequences of arming yourself with a knife. Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family who have shown courage and strength throughout the trial.

‘It is my hope that this outcome brings a measure of justice and closure to everyone affected by this tragic incident.’
