Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is conducting free home fire safety checks throughout Kent and Medway this February, aimed at enhancing household safety across the region.

Starting today, teams will visit homes, no appointment necessary, as part of their ongoing initiative to ensure residents have sufficient working smoke alarms.

The service will be visiting various locations across Kent on 5th, 10th, 16th, and 25th February, with crews offering to test, relocate, and install smoke alarms for free.

Firefighters will also provide tailored home safety advice and address any resident queries, according to Joe Bathurst, Group Manager for KFRS.

"Teams from Kent Fire and Rescue Service will be knocking on doors to offer free home safety checks," Mr Bathurst said.

"Visits will take about 10 minutes, and our teams will offer to test, relocate, and install new smoke alarms where they're needed."

Increased awareness around the importance of smoke alarms comes as new figures reveal only nine percent of people in the South East check their alarms.

The service has outlined what residents should expect during these visits.

Firefighters will display KFRS photo ID, wear branded uniforms, and be accompanied by a fire engine or marked vehicle nearby.

Residents concerned about scams can verify officers’ identities by calling 0800 923 7000.

Leanne McMahon, Director of Protection, Prevention, and Engagement at KFRS, emphasised the critical need for working smoke alarms.

“The main aim is to check every home has enough working smoke alarms and that they are in date,” Mrs McMahon said.

Furthermore, KFRS offers free, pre-booked Safe and Well visits for residents over 70, people with long-term health conditions, smokers, families with children under five, and expectant parents.
