Kent man joins KSS Heli Hike to honour brother and nephew
Ian Hoyle is taking part in the charity event after losing both in a tragic road accident.
The Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) are inviting communities across Kent to participate in the annual Heli Hike and Family Fun Day today.
One of this year's participants is Ian Hoyle, who will walk in memory of his brother Andy and nephew Joshua, both tragically lost in a road traffic accident in 2021: "Lucky enough for us, we had the air ambulance on site at Kent, Surrey and Sussex, and they were able to airlift Joshua to King's Hospital, where we were able to have nine extra days with Joshua.
"And we were able to say good night, tell him we love him, hold his hand and actually get to say goodbye. So without the air ambulance, we wouldn't have got them nine days, which is why. We are doing what we're doing."
Ian, along with his supporters Jay Hicks and Carlo Capelli, aims to raise significant funds for KSS, reflecting on the charity's impact during his family's time of need.
Speaking to us about the challenge involved he said:
"For me personally, it's a big milestone. Last year I had a full hip replacement. So this will be my big first challenge and it was something for me to push myself in honour of the boys as well, to give back to the charity and hopefully just raise more money so they can be there when other families need them."
The Heli Hike features three routes: a gentle 3-mile walk, a scenic 7.5-mile route, and a new 10-mile challenge, catering to walkers of all ages and abilities, including dogs.
Participants will be welcomed at the finish line with a medal, a complimentary drink, and a hero's reception at the wider family fun day, where visitors can meet KSS crew members, explore the helicopter (if not in use), and learn about the charity’s critical care services, responding to over 3,100 incidents each year.
Every pound raised will contribute to the annual £20.8 million needed to maintain the 24/7 service, emphasising the role of public donations and fundraising.
